碓井雅史（Masashi Usui）。
日本を中心に国内外で演奏・教育活動を行うサクソフォーン奏者・作編曲家・教育者。

Schulich School of Music of McGill University にて、Jazz Performance 修士課程を修了（日本人第一号）。

碓井の音楽は、1920〜1950年代に確かに存在し、いまは失われた音楽のあり方を出発点としている。
それを復元するのでも、様式として再現するのでもない。
復元や単なる再現ではなく、
現代を生きる身体と感覚によって、音と向き合っている。

音楽は個人の技量だけで完結するものではない。
楽器、編成、空間、演奏者とリスナーとの関係。
そうした要素が重なり合い、はじめて音楽がひとつの世界を作り出す。

このような信念に基づき、演奏、作編曲、教育のすべてを行っている。

これまでに
All That You See（2017）、Everlasting（2021）を発表。
ジャズを基盤としながら、過去への深い理解と現在の感覚とのあいだを行き来する表現は、国内外で注目を集めている。

2022年より、
フランスのリードメーカー MARCA Reeds Saxophone Gold Artist（日本人第一号）。

本物に出会ってしまった人が、戻ってくる場所。
耳が、戻る場所。

教育においては、
長期・少人数を基本としている。

短期的な成果や、即時的な手応えを目的とした指導は行わない。

耳と感覚を、時間をかけて育てていくことを大切にし、
その過程に主体的に向き合えることを、何よりも重んじている。

碓井の活動は、
過去を保存するためのものでも、現在の流行に応じるためのものでもない。
演奏も、教育も、創作も、
すべてはそのために行われている。

 

略歴

富山県出身。
愛知県立芸術大学器楽科卒業。
Schulich School of Music of McGill University
Jazz Performance 修士課程を、日本人第一号として修了。
在学中に Schulich Scholarship および
Graduate Excellence Fellowship を授与される。

1998年、第15回富山県青少年音楽コンクールにて
「青少年音楽大賞」ほか、同コンクール歴代最多となる賞を受賞。

2016年、自身のカルテットで
モントリオール国際ジャズフェスティバルに出演。
以降、同フェスティバルに継続的に参加している。

これまでに数多くのライブおよびレコーディングを行い、
Reg Schwager、Paul Shrofel、Adrian Vedady、Andre White、
Laura Anglade、Fernanda Cunha など、
カナダを代表する音楽家たちとアルバムを制作。

教育分野においても高い評価を受け、
モントリオール国際ジャズフェスティバル40周年記念
Oliver-Jones Award において、
指導した学生がグランプリを受賞。

2018年まで McGill University 講師
（Jazz Practical Instruction）を務める。

2022年より、
フランスのリードメーカー
MARCA Reeds Saxophone Gold Artist（日本人第一号）。

クラシック奏法とジャズ奏法を往還しながら、
演奏と教育の両面で、その可能性を探り続けている。

Masashi Usui.
A saxophonist, composer/arranger, and educator, based primarily in Japan and active internationally.

He completed the Master’s program in Jazz Performance at the Schulich School of Music, McGill University — the first Japanese to do so.

Usui’s work begins with the ways music was made in the 1920s–1950s, practices that have largely fallen out of use. Rather than restoring or reproducing those styles, he approaches sound anew through the living body and contemporary sensibility.

Music does not end with individual technique alone. Instruments, ensemble, acoustic space, and the relationship between performers and listeners — only when these elements come together does music form its own world.

Guided by this conviction, he pursues performance, composition/arrangement, and education as a unified practice.

Rooted in jazz, his work moves between a deep understanding of the past and a present sensibility, and has drawn attention both in Japan and internationally.

A place people return to after encountering something genuine.
A place where the ear feels at home.

In education he favors long-term, small-group formats. He does not offer instruction aimed at quick results or instant gratification. He values taking the time to cultivate listening and musical sensitivity, and places the highest importance on students’ active commitment to that process.

Usui’s activity is neither about preserving the past for its own sake nor about following current trends. Performance, teaching, and composition are all undertaken to realize that purpose.

 

Professional Background

Born in Toyama Prefecture, Japan.

Graduated from Aichi Prefectural University of the Arts, Department of Instrumental Music.
Completed the Master’s program in Jazz Performance at the Schulich School of Music, McGill University — the first Japanese to do so.
While enrolled he was awarded the Schulich Scholarship and the Graduate Excellence Fellowship.

1998 — Winner of the Youth Music Grand Prize and multiple awards (record) at the 15th Toyama Prefecture Youth Music Competition.

2016 — Performed at the Montreal International Jazz Festival with his quartet; has participated in the festival on a continuing basis since then.

He has performed extensively and recorded widely, collaborating on albums with leading Canadian musicians such as Reg Schwager, Paul Shrofel, Adrian Vedady, Andre White, Laura Anglade, and Fernanda Cunha.

In education he has also been recognized: at the Montreal International Jazz Festival’s 40th-anniversary Oliver Jones Award, a student he coached won the Grand Prize.

He served as a lecturer in Jazz Practical Instruction at McGill University until 2018.

Since 2022,
MARCA Reeds — Saxophone Gold Artist (first Japanese artist).

Working between classical and jazz techniques, he continues to explore possibilities in both performance and education.

Saxophoniste, compositeur/arrangeur et pédagogue, basé principalement au Japon et actif à l’international.

Il a complété le Master en Jazz Performance à la Schulich School of Music de l’Université McGill — premier Japonais à l’avoir fait.

L’œuvre de Usui prend pour point de départ les manières de faire de la musique dans les années 1920–1950, des pratiques aujourd’hui en grande partie tombées en désuétude. Plutôt que de restaurer ou reproduire ces styles, il aborde le son de nouveau par le corps vivant et une sensibilité contemporaine.

La musique ne se réduit pas à la virtuosité individuelle. Instruments, formation, acoustique et relation entre interprètes et auditeurs — ce n’est que lorsque ces éléments se rejoignent que la musique trouve son propre univers.

Animé par cette conviction, il mène performance, composition/arrangement et enseignement comme une pratique unifiée.

Sur le plan pédagogique, il privilégie le travail de longue durée en petits groupes. Il ne propose pas d’enseignement visant des résultats rapides ou des satisfactions immédiates. Il attache de l’importance au temps nécessaire pour cultiver l’écoute et la sensorialité musicale, et place au premier plan l’engagement actif des apprenants dans ce processus.

L’activité de Usui n’a ni pour objet de conserver le passé pour lui-même, ni pour but de suivre les modes du moment. Interprétation, enseignement et création sont tous mis en œuvre au service de cet objectif.

 

Parcours professionnel

Originaire de la préfecture de Toyama, Japon.

Nombreuses prestations et enregistrements ; a collaboré à des albums avec des représentants de premier plan de la scène canadienne tels que Reg Schwager, Paul Shrofel, Adrian Vedady, Andre White, Laura Anglade et Fernanda Cunha.

Dans le domaine de l’enseignement, il a également reçu des reconnaissances : lors de la commémoration du 40e anniversaire du Festival international de jazz de Montréal, le Oliver-Jones Award, un de ses étudiants a remporté le Grand Prix.

Il a été chargé de cours en Jazz Practical Instruction à McGill University jusqu’en 2018.

Allant et venant entre la technique classique et la technique jazz, il poursuit l’exploration des possibilités à la fois en performance et en pédagogie.
