Everlasting ~ 不朽 ~

柔らかくどこまでも自然で美しい音色、まるでフルオーケストラのような壮大な表現から研ぎ澄まされた繊細で小さな音、そして優しさと真心から生み出される深く驚きに満ち溢れた即興の歌の数々。そんな比類無き世界的ピアニストPhillip Strangeフィリップ・ストレンジとの出会いは私がクラシック音楽家からジャズ音楽家に転向して間もない頃でした。彼は駆け出しの私に何を学ぶべきか、ジャズ・音楽の本質を明確にそして真摯に教えてくれ、いつか同じステージで会おうと約束をしたのです。

2018年春、およそ13年の月日を経てコンサートで再会、初めて一緒に仕事をするというのにまるで30年来の親友のように再会と共演実現の喜びを分かち合うステージ、それがこの Masashi Usui & Phillip Strange Jazz Duo 結成の瞬間でした。

このアルバムには短編小説集のように多様な世界観のオリジナル作品が収録されており、それらは旅の思い出やこれまでの人生で体験した印象的な出来事に基づく回想録のような音の物語です。

カナダの首都オタワに住む友人Adamの家に滞在した時の思い出より、彼が毎朝作ってくれた新鮮な野菜サラダとトルティーヤが絶品のメキシカン朝食 ”Desayunoデザユノ”から始まり、お昼の後に紅葉を観に ”Route 62” へハイキング、 ”The Taste of Peat 燻製の香り ” が特徴の極上スコッチを片手に共に語らい、楽器を吹いて秋の夜長を楽しむ夢のような毎日でした。

”My Room in Chelsea” はニューヨーク滞在時お気に入りのホテルの一室。敬愛するフランスの大作曲家Maurice Ravelのピアノ作品からインスピレーションを受けた ”Menuet メヌエット”。名作映画「ローマの休日」で王女アンを演じたオードリー・ヘプバーンに捧げる ”Audrey’s Holiday”。”Innocenceイノセンス” は一番古い記憶の断片から微かに思い出すことができる幼少期に見た大きな木の生い茂る不思議な森の中の風景。

Phillipとの愉快な会話や演奏の楽しさを書き綴った ”Speak!” と”ChitChat”。”The Crooked Man 背の曲がった男” はイギリスのテレビ小説「シャーロック・ホームズの冒険」に収録されたエピソードの1つで、戦乱により婚約者と生き別れになった兵士の悲哀をメロディにしました。

今作唯一のバラード ”Everlasting 不朽” では、これまでの人生における数々の心通う素晴らしい出会いへの感謝の気持ちを胸に誠実に生きていきたいという思い、そして私とPhillipの真心からの音楽が国や人種、時代を超えていつまでも自然に美しくみんなの心に響いてほしいという願いが込められています。

<Everlasting エヴァラスティング>

碓井雅史さんは人の感情が大きく変動する様、そしてその微妙なニュアンスをサックスの音と音色の色彩感で表現する奏者です。初期の経歴において、熟練したクラシックサックス奏者として多くのキャリアを経ており、碓井さんは、ごく僅かな奏者にしか修得できないであろう幅広い音色のパレット、ダイナミクス、そしてアーティキュレーションなどの技術を徐々に磨き完成させていきました。

その一方で、現代クラシックサックスのレパートリーにおけるダイレクトな意思疎通と表現の希薄化に不満を感じ行き詰っていた碓井さんは、即興により生み出されるメロディーの美しさと音楽的な可能性に触発され、アカデミックな制約に制約されること無くジャズの研究と演奏を始めました。彼の想像力が花開くにつれて、芸術的な表現を可能とする彼の熟達した演奏技術も相まって、彼の思い描く音楽がすぐに実現し始めました。

Everlasting ~エヴァラスティング 不朽~ は碓井さんの新しいオリジナル曲を収録したデュオアルバムです。彼のオリジナル作品はどれも親しみやすさがありとても聴きやすいため、演奏者とリスナーとの音楽的な壁が取り払われています。そして、彼の音楽作品において、どこまでも自然で無理強いをしないサックスの音色と表情により聴く者を感情的なメロディーの物語にいざない、耳に安らぎをあたえます。また、彼の作曲と即興の様式は、過去の偉大なジャズサックス奏者への愛情と敬意に基づいているだけではなく、現代的で新しい表現方法も探求しています。

Everlasting

A beautiful, supple sound, so natural, ranging from a grandiose expressivity as if backed by a full orchestra to tiny moments of utmost delicacy and refinement: song after song replete with the deep resonance that can only come from superlative skill and true sincerity—shortly after making the transition from classical music to the world of jazz, I had the good fortune to encounter works by the peerless, world-renowned pianist Phillip Strange. As someone just starting out in this new world, I learned from him what I needed to know to forge my own path. His music allowed me to grasp the true nature of jazz, its expressive power and impact. From then on, I promised myself that I would someday share a stage with him.

Thirteen years later, in the spring of 2018, my wish came true: the Masashi Usui & Phillip Strange Jazz Duo was born. Though this was our first time working together, we felt like friends of thirty years or more reuniting to experience the joy of joint expression.

This album is like a collection of short stories, a tale told in sound through a diverse array of original compositions inspired by various travels and experiences.

“Desayuno” is named for the Mexican-style breakfast of fresh salad and tortillas I enjoyed every morning while staying in Ottawa with my friend Adam; in the afternoons, we would go hiking along “Route 62” to see the fall colors; finally, the autumn evenings were spent playing our instruments deep into the night and enjoying good conversation over the “The Taste of Peat”—the exceptional, top-drawer Scotch he would share with me. These were days that passed like a wonderful dream.

“My Room in Chelsea” evokes a room in my favorite hotel where I stayed during my time in New York City. “Munuet” is inspired by a piano piece by beloved French composer Maurice Ravel. “Audrey’s Holiday” is a tribute to Audrey Hepburn and her role as Princess Ann in the film Roman Holiday. The song “Innocence” is based on a fragment of one of my earliest memories—glimpses of a mysterious forest filled with enormous trees I remember seeing as a young child.

“Speak” and “Chit-Chat” are songs expressing the sheer joy Phillip and I have had talking and playing together. “The Crooked Man” is inspired by an episode of the British television series The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, the mournful melody expressing the tragic situation of a soldier separated from his fiancé by the chaos of war.

The single ballad in this collection, “Everlasting,” is meant to express our thanks for the countless wonderful encounters that have touched our hearts over the years, and our wish to honor these memories as we live out the rest of our lives. Phillip and I hope this song will resonate in everyone’s hearts regardless of time, nationality, or ethnicity, conveying the sincerity with which we’ve poured our hearts into our music.

Everlasting

Masashi Usui is a saxophonist whose sound and tone color convey the full range and nuance of human emotion. An accomplished classical saxophonist through much of his early career, Usui gradually perfected his technical mastery over a wide palette of tone, dynamics, and articulation in a way that few people are able to achieve. Unsatisfied with the dilution of direct communication and expression in modern classical repertoire, Usui began to study and play jazz— inspired by the musical possibility and beauty of improvised melody, yet unconstrained by academic agenda. His music making quickly began took shape as his imagination blossomed: well-honed technical control now in the service of personal artistic expression.

Everlasting is a duo recording consisting entirely of Masashi Usui’s new compositions. The result is highly listenable, erasing aesthetic barriers between performer and listener. His compositions have a sense of familiarity, putting the ear at ease while inviting listeners to follow the emotional story of the melody while luxuriating in the unforced beauty and nuance of his sound. Stylistically, Usui’s compositions and soloing are informed by love and respect of past masters of jazz saxophone, yet also search new avenues of contemporary expression.

Musicians and listeners alike are sure to appreciate the mastery of melody, sound, and rhythm evident in Everlasting. Usui’s compositions, ranging in style from swing to blues, bossa nova to ballads, place the listener’s ear above other considerations, opening direct lines of communication and sensual beauty. The healing impact of this music invites repeated listening: Everlasting is “lifestyle” music, a welcome emotional respite from the stress of daily life and routine.
