碓井雅史 (うすいまさし) サクソフォーン奏者、作編曲家、MARCA Reeds Saxophone Gold Artist 日本第一号
富山県東礪波郡井波町出身。高校時代より師である世界的なサクソフォーン奏者、雲井雅人氏のサウンド、音楽に感銘を受けサクソフォニストを志す。
1998年3月第15回富山県青少年音楽コンクール「青少年音楽大賞」および「管打楽器部門最優秀賞」「福井音楽賞」「富山県教育委員会教育長賞」「北日本新聞社長賞」「文化連盟賞」など歴代最高数の賞を受賞。
2003年愛知県立芸術大学器楽科卒業。
2013年、世界的ドラマー田井中福司氏との共演をきっかけに、日本国内はもちろん同年10月にはニューヨークで、2014年1月にはモントリオールで数多くのミュージシャンとの共演を通して本格派ジャズメンとしてのスピリットを学ぶ。同年7月よりモントリオールに拠点を移す。
2015年、カナダ屈指の名門McGill大学大学院音楽学部jazz performance科に入学。同時にMcGill大学大学院からSchulich ScholarshipおよびGraduate Excellence Fellowshipを付与される。
2016年、モントリオール国際ジャズフェスティバルに自身のカルテットで出演する。同年11月には再びMcGill大学大学院からGraduate Excellence Fellowshipを付与される。
2017年、McGill大学大学院音楽学部jazz performance科を日本人第一号として修了。カナダを代表する演奏家Paul Shrofel, Adrian Vedady, André Whiteとモントリオールにてレコーディングを行い1stアルバム“All That You See”を発表。同年7月にモントリオール国際ジャズフェスティバルに自身のカルテットで出演。同年9月、McGill大学大学院音楽学部Graduate Diploma jazz performance科に入学。同時にMcGill大学音楽学部の非常勤講師としてPractical Instructionを担当、後進の指導にあたる。
2019年6月、モントリオール国際ジャズフェスティバルにLaura Anglade Quintetのメンバーとして出演。同時にLauraの1stアルバム「I’ve Got Just About Everything」がJustin Time Records から発売。音楽家育成にも才能を発揮しており、モントリオール国際ジャズフェスティバル40周年記念として開催されたOliver-Jones Awardにて彼の生徒がグランプリを受賞。
2021年8月8日ピアニストのPhillip Strange氏と制作した2ndアルバム”Everlasting”を発表。同年12月22日にカナダを代表する音楽家Fernanda Cunhaと世界的なギタリストReg Schwagerによる共作アルバム「Late Night」がリリース。タイトル曲にソリストとして参加。カナダ・トロント在住であったがコロナ禍の影響で2020年春から日本で仕事をしている。
2022年11月より、フランスの大手リードメーカーMARCA社と日本初のMARCA Reeds Saxophone Gold Artistとして契約。
これまでサクソフォーンを雲井雅人、Al McLeanの両氏に、室内楽を中川良平、村田四郎、和久井仁の各氏に、ジャズ全般を田井中福司、Kevin Dean両氏に師事する。古き良き時代のジャズを彷彿とさせる本格的なサックスの音色で注目を集める。クラシックの室内楽やオーケストラでの演奏で培われた確かなアンサンブル能力、卓越した技術に基づく幅広い表現力も兼ね備え、ジャズの伝統と歴史に深く根ざした音楽性は国や言葉の壁を越えて聴く者を魅了する。
北米にてFukushi Tainaka, André White, Mark Taylor, Al McLean, Kevin Dean, Reg Schwager, Mike Rud, Greg Clayton, Geoff Lapp, Paul Shrofel, Neil Swainson, Alec Walkington, Adrian Vedady, 日本国内では大森明, 吉岡秀晃, Phillip Strange等と共演している。

Masashi Usui is a Toronto-based jazz tenor saxophonist, composer, arranger, MARCA Reeds Saxophone Gold Artist who has been in Canada since 2014. He has a special ability to interpret traditional American jazz but with a contemporary freshness. He graduated Masters of Music in Jazz Performance at Schulich School of Music of McGill University in which he acquired a Schulich Scholarship and a Graduate Excellence Fellowship. He performed with his quartet at the Montreal International Jazz Festival in 2016 and 2017. In July 2017, he released his first album which has all his compositions. He has taught at Schulich School of Music of McGill University as a Practical Instruction Instructor since 2017.
He has accompanied prominent jazz artists in North America, including drummer Fukushi Tainaka, André White, Dave Laing, and Mark Taylor, saxophonist Al McLean, trumpeter Kevin Dean, guitarist Reg Schwager, Mike Rud, and Greg Clayton, pianist André White, Geoff Lapp, Steve Holt, and Paul Shrofel, bassist Neil Swainson, Alec Walkington, Alex Bellegarde, and Adrian Vedady.
In Japan, saxophonist Akira Ohmori, guitarist Sunao Wada, pianist Phillip Strange and Hideaki Yoshioka.

Masashi Usui est un saxophoniste et compositeur japonais. Il est né à Inami, dans le district d’Higashitonami, Toyama.
Depuis l’époque du lycée il suit des cours avec Masato Kumoi dont la musique et les sonorités l’impressionnent profondément. Il se destine alors au saxophone.
En mars 1998, il est primé de nombreuses fois lors du 15ème concours musical pour la jeunesse de Toyama (Récompense musicale pour la jeunesse, Grand prix des instruments à vent en bois, Récompense musicale Fukui, Récompense du directeur du bureau de l’éducation de Toyama, Récompense du P.D.G. du Journal Nord Japon et récompense de le Fédération Culturelle).
En 2003 il sort diplômé de la Faculté de Musique de l’Université préfectorale des Arts d’Aichi.
Actuellement il étudie toujours le saxophone auprès de Masato Kumoi mais aussi de Al McLean. Pour la musique de chambre ses maîtres sont Ryohei Nakagawa, Shiro Murata et Hitoshi Wakui. Pour le jazz c’est avec Fukushi Tainaka qu’il s’entraîne.
C’est d’ailleurs avec ce célèbre batteur qu’il a joué en 2013. Ce fut le point de départ de concerts avec de nombreux musiciens, non seulement au Japon, mais aussi à New York (oct. 2013) et Montréal (janv. 2014). Dès lors il évolue vers le jazz et en juillet 2014 il se consacre à l’interprétation.
En 2015 il intègre l’Ecole de musique Schulich, le Département d’interprétation de jazz de l’Université de McGill. Il reçoit une bourse d’étude Schulich ainsi qu’une bourse d’excellence d’études supérieures.
En 2016 il joue au Festival international de jazz de Montréal avec son quartette, le Masashi Usui Quartet. Et en novembre de la même année il se voit attribué une nouvelle bourse d’excellence d’études supérieures.
En 2017 il termine sa Maîtrise en Musique à l’école Schulich, interprétation de jazz. En juillet 2017 il se produira au Festival international de Jazz de Montréal avec son Masashi Usui Quartet.
Il gagne en notoriété grâce aux sonorités qu’il tire de son saxophone, dans la tradition. Mais ses compétences puisées dans sa pratique de la musique de chambre et de l’orchestre concertant relèvent son interprétation et donnent un style musical expressif basé sur une excellente technique. Sa musicalité, profondément enracinée dans l’histoire et la tradition du jazz, rompt les frontières et les barrières linguistiques et, toujours, fascine son auditoire.
